Can The Phrase Staycation Undervalue the UK Holiday?

The Emergence of the term Staycation, during the pandemic for many, gave the option of hope when holidays overseas had been cancelled. The UK became overwhelmed with domestic tourists seeking an alternative to flying for the sun.

Definition

Previously A staycation, or holistay, is a period in which an individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within day trip distance of their home and does not require overnight accommodation.Wikipedia post pandemic however has meant the term is more widely used to define staying within your own country and seeking the holiday experience without leaving your home country.

When our world travel was turned upside down, we regained our blue skies, we had a summer of continuous sunshine and we gradually found there was much to discover on our doorstep.

Our airports are now overwhelmed with an upturn in departures, maybe the prospect of long delays to both outbound and inbound journeys will again see a domestic tourism boom. Will our environmental conscience get the better of our travel ambition and permit us to seek a less costly way of taking a break?

If the journey is more important than the destination, then perhaps just maybe the UK will have much to offer as an alternative to flight delays.

This weekend over our family farm stay, we enjoyed the west midlands Baloon festival flying overhead, reminiscent of early flights, this primitive yet aspirational form of flight can indeed reignite our desire for travel, whatever its form.

Whether you are enjoying a UK holiday or indeed consider yourself a rebranded Staycationer, take time to experience the journey as this will often be the most memorable part.
